Rooting outdoor learning into every day education

Welcome to Root:Ed Outdoor Learning CIC, where we empower schools to integrate high-quality, outdoor learning into their curriculum, fostering engagement, wellbeing, and inclusion.

About Root:Ed

We work alongside school leaders and teaching staff to turn outdoor learning from an occasional activity into a planned, curriculum-aligned approach that supports attainment, wellbeing, and inclusion.

Our consultancy provides:

  • Practical, staff-friendly training that builds confidence to teach outdoors year-round

  • Curriculum for Excellence-aligned outdoor learning plans and lesson models bespoke to your school and community

  • Clear risk-benefit frameworks that satisfy local authority and inspection requirements

  • Inclusive approaches that support ASN, nurture, and wellbeing priorities

  • Ongoing mentoring so outdoor learning continues after the project ends

The Impact:
Schools gain a confident staff team, improved pupil engagement and wellbeing, and an outdoor learning approach that is embedded, measurable, and sustainable — not dependent on one enthusiastic individual.

Workshops

What if curriculum learning could feel like exploration rather than instruction?

Our block of outdoor learning workshops helps pupils explore, question and discover through nature. Each session builds confidence, curiosity and connection while supporting curriculum learning. Staff are welcome to team teach and join the fun for an enriching experience for all!

Internationally, I worked as a Tinkergarten Leader in Texas, delivering play-based outdoor learning for children aged 18 months–5 years, mentoring other leaders, supporting professional networks, and adapting programmes online to help families stay connected to nature during the pandemic. Alongside my professional work, I’m also a parent to two energetic boys, who remind me every day how important outdoor play, adventure and discovery are for children’s wellbeing and growth. Life has taken me on some unexpected paths so far, and I’ve learned that sometimes the best thing you can do is step outside, embrace the journey, and see where it leads. I’m so glad you’re here, I’d love to hear from you and see how we might work together.

Having worked as a Primary Teacher since 2008, I’ve led curriculum-linked outdoor learning across Early Years, ASN and Primary in Aberdeen schools, developed whole-school outdoor learning approaches, redesigned school grounds with pupils and communities, and contributed to award-winning initiatives recognised by Schools for Nature, the RSPB Wild Challenge and achieved Beacon School Status with The Tree Council.

Hello! I’m Lindsay Shepherd, Director of Root:Ed Outdoor Learning CIC.
